What is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a simple procedure performed to release the restriction of the frenum, the connective tissue attaching tongue to the floor of the mouth (tongue tie) and lip to the gum tissue (lip tie). This restriction does not allow normal movement of the tongue and lip and can have significant impacts on your infant's wellbeing.
Types of Frenectomies
Lingual Frenectomy (Tongue Tie)
Often performed on neonatal patients to assist with nursing or on toddlers, a lingual frenectomy is also referred to as the release of a tongue-tie (ankyloglossia). This procedure is performed on the connective tissue under the tongue to address any limited movement caused by the frenum's tissue.
Labial Frenectomy (Lip Tie)
A labial frenectomy is performed on the connective tissue that connects each lip to the gums. Lip ties can also affect your infant's ability to feed properly. In toddlers and older children, labial frenectomies may be performed to help resolve speech impediments or to aid with orthodontic treatment.
Benefits of a tongue or lip tie release:
- Assists a baby to latch correctly and feed effectively from the breast
- Supports the natural development of speech
- Helps your baby clean their mouth while eating
- Permits correct swallowing
- Fosters appropriate growth and development
