What to Expect During the Evaluation
During an evaluation, we take a close look at the frenulum — the little piece of tissue that connects the lip or tongue to the gums. If a frenectomy is recommended, we will discuss the best way to perform the procedure and what to expect during recovery. Most cases can be completed in the same office visit.
Things We Look For
Visual and Functional Assessment
- Our specialist will use simple methods to assess the frenulum to determine its thickness and degrees of restriction in order to ascertain how well the tongue and lip move.
Identifying Symptoms
During our examination, we will be on the lookout for signs that a frenectomy might be beneficial, such as:
- Trouble breastfeeding or bottle-feeding in infants.
- Difficulty with speech, like saying certain sounds.
- Mouth breathing or keeping the mouth open a lot.
- Gum recession.
- Concerns about how a prominent frenulum looks
Determining When to Release
A look in the mouth at the frenum anatomy is one piece of the puzzle. However, the diagnosis of a tie and the subsequent recommendation of treatment are completely guided by the presence of symptoms for the patient.
If Treatment is Recommended
After evaluation, if treatment is recommended, most cases can be treated during the same appointment visit.
